I am Mary Immaculate School.
Yes indeed, i was an Immaculate Conception with the powers and foresight of the great visionary and scholar The Late Honorable Bishop L.R. Morrow in the spring of 1962. An English medium school was the domain of the very rich people's children then and largely confined in metropolitan cities, unheard of in moffusil towns. The Late Bishop Morrow had rightly sensed this absence of a school which could give modern quality education to the children of such Tier 3 towns, like Berhampore, Murshidabad. In the hands of the Great Man, the Foundation Stone was laid and I, Mary Immaculate School, with the motto "Love, Knowledge, Service" came into existence.
My early days were not all smooth sailing. It was only after a lot of persuasion of the 1st Principal Sr. Aloysia and a lot of hard work by Sr. Cicily, that God finally answered to the prayers of all the citizens of Berhampore as also many more well wishers, and finally I became a fully functional and I.C.S.E accredited co-educational school. It was a school which was not prohibitively expensive, but at par in standard of education given, when compared to even elite Convents of the country. Soon the people of Berhampore embraced me with open arms, and the students strength rose with each passing year.
As the years rolled by, i was most lucky and blessed to have at my helm, such able Principals like Sr. Cicily, Sr. Florette, Sr. Gracemary, Sr.Limarose, and now to the present school principal, Sr.Solly. All of them had one thing common amongst them, and that is the urge of constantly bettering the infrastructure, the extracurricular activities encouraged to the children, as also the relentless up gradation of teaching standards at M.I.S. Since the year 2008, 10 plus 2, I.S.C exams are also conducted at M.I.S.
Along with the scope to study Arts, Commerce, Science subjects, Literature & Language in English, Bengali or Hindi, computer education was also started way back in the year 1991. M.I.S already boasts of a very well stocked library, fully equipped Biology, Chemistry and an air conditioned Computer Laboratory as also a huge playground to indulge in all kinds of sports. Immense stress is given in intellectual and personality development of every child. Co-curricular activities like Annual sports, Teacher's Day, Founder's Day, Children's Day, Christmas celebrations, Scout and Guide camps, Eco club activities as also various competitions like singing, dancing, quizzing, elocution, antakshari, debate, mono act, drawing games etc. are highly encouraged upon, all with the motive of inculcating a healthy sense of competition and promote an urge to excel in everything. Other than all the other study subjects, Moral Science, Value Education as also the first levels of Sex education is imparted to both boys and girls, all of which are so important in today's society. All of these has resulted in excellent results in Class 10 and Class 12 finals, year after year. M.I.S has not only produced brilliant students in abundance, but developed worthy citizens of our mother land in every sense of the word. Boys and girls, who were lucky enough to get their education at M.I.S, thank their parents for choosing it, and today are spread around the entire globe holding the highest positions in society and contributing towards wealth generation in which ever country they are. Some are scientists, doctors, engineers, Corporate tycoons, MBAs, sports persons, academicians, artists, musicians, and in so many other professions, all making me, Mary Immaculate School. so very proud.
This journey, which started in 1962, has finally meandered its way to the present year 2012. Yes this year marks the completion of 50 glorious years of my inception. Now that an ex students association named M.I.S.A.A (www.misaa.org), has come into existence from the year 2011, the bridging of the past pupils with their Alma Mater has become all the more smooth. Members of M.I.S.A.A have already taken up a lot many developmental works at M.I.S as also contributing towards the society at large. Notable among them are blood donation, health check up camps for the poor, distribution of warm clothes to the poor, planting trees, donations and philanthropist work with destitute homes etc. as also there present venture to get back the green top of the play ground at M.I.S, which have thinned down over the years. M.I.S.A.A along with the Sisters of Mary Immaculate School have together also chalked down a detailed schedule of programmes to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of M.I.S. Today, as i touch the year 2012, M.I.S has around 2200 students as also 60 highly motivated teachers. New buildings have come up on different sides of the school compound providing new airy classrooms to study, and the well appointed school auditorium stays abuzz with many a cultural and co-curricular activities that students enthusiastically embark upon round the year. The, small sapling that i was once long ago, have blossomed into a fully grown tree
I feel so thrilled and excited at the prospects of celebrating my 50th birthday!! I, Mary Immaculate School, have completed 50 years but yet i don't feel old or ailing. I feel ever energized, youthful and full with exuberance. My leaves continue to be green and as new toddlers stroll down my premises every new academic year to begin a new journey, i feel recharged again and understand the necessity to live on, to continue my duty of molding them to tomorrow's citizens, to usher in yet another dawn, to continue the saga of success, generation after generation.
